Curtis Granderson In Pinstripes?? Color Me Intrigued

It's been reported that the Tigers have made it known that Curtis Granderson is on the market. The Yankees of course have interest. When don't they, right?

Bringing Curtis into the fold intrigues me. He's one of the best CFs in the game and can pretty much do it all at the plate. He is one of 4 guys (I think) who have pulled off a 20-20-20-20 season (2B, 3B, HR, and SB). What's not to like about that? He's also relatively cheap if you look at his salary. He's under contract until 2012 with a club option for 2013 Over the next 3 years, he's owed a base total of $23.75 million ($5.5M in 2010, $8.25M in 2011, $10M in 2012). His 2013 team option is for $13M with a $2M buyout. That's a bargain if you ask me.

I think the Yankees will and should explore trading for Curtis. You'd have to assume that The Tigers would want one of the Yankees young SP (Phil or Joba) and probably some other prospects. I don't think the asking price would be too high. Grandy had a down year in 2009, hitting only .249 (23 points below career average of .272) and his OPS was only.780 (about 48 points below his career OPS. Personally, I think Curtis would do well in NY. I wouldn't mind seeing Curtis patrolling the OF with Melky and Swisher. He's definitely an upgrade over Damon. The lower salary wouldn't hurt either. I think if Cash gets the opportunity, he should try to make it happen. At the right price of course. I wouldn't give up Hughes/Joba and Austin Jackson. I don't think I'd give up Jackson at all. I think Joba is expendable and wouldn't be surprised if his name comes up in trade talks. I also wouldn't be surprised if Cashman could wrangle CG away from the Tigers for a group of other prospects. We'll have to see.

Am I the only one out there who'd like to see Granderson in Pinstripes? Right now there's not much to this. It's pure speculation. But it's fun to talk and think about. Just one of the many reasons why I love the Hot Stove.

Peace, love and Pinstripes,

J-Boogie

I like Granderson a lot, J-Boogie. He's fast, plays a good CF, has power, and seems like a really good guy and teammate. However, I have some real questions about him and whether or not he would fit in with the Yankees. His speed would be most welcome, but I think he's become too homer-happy. His 30 homers have come at the expense of his OBP, which was .327 last year. That's way too low for the Yankees. He also strikes out way too much--141 times twice in the last four years, and a whopping 174 times in 2006. The Yankees simply don't need to give away outs, and for all his positive attributes, Granderson gives away outs. I have concerns that, should they deal for Granderson, they would in essence get a younger Mike Cameron--good speed, good glove and defense, some pop, but way too many K's and too low an OBP.

I wouldn't trade Jackson, either. Nor would I trade Joba. He's yet to come close to his potential, and he was very good in the Series. He looked alive again coming out of the bullpen, and his stuff was dominant. Except maybe, maybe for Halliday, I would not deal Joba.

I'll start by saying that I am an anti Yankee fan, but Granderson would be used best by the Yankees.

All the things you mention are true (the 20/20/20/20 season happened in 2007). Also, Granderson got destroyed by lefties last year (.183 average against). Given what he's being paid though it would be tough for most baseball teams to just sit him. Not the case with the Yankees though. Of course keeping him happy in a platoon role is another issue...

Jason - you make some pretty solid points. I still think it's definitely worth making a run at. I guess it all comes down to what they'd give up. Maybe dealing Joba wouldn't make sense.

Scheunder - It almost would have to be a platoon based on his performance vs LHPs. It's definitely something he's struggled with throughout his career. I guess it would come down to whether or not he'd be happy with that.

I like the possibilities of this. I don't want them to get Granderson just because he's Granderson. But if the Yankees can make a deal without giving up any of their top prospects it gets interesting. I would be willing to put Jackson in the deal depending.
